Elevated lighting

Playing with the composition of simple forms and pure natural materials, the Composition Light is a simple narrative of light, structures and textures.

Meet the designer

Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir, the designer of the Composition Lights, is one of Iceland's top product designers today, based in London. Theodora’s work revolves around the narrative an object can inhabit and exploring ways of objectifying that narrative.

She experiments with shapes and moulds and how the molds can be prolonged into useful objects like lamps. Theodora is an adjunct in product design at Iceland University of the Arts and is an Associate Lecturer, at the Cass, London Metropolitan University.

Our Approach to Sustainability

Marble from cut-off waste

Every marble piece featured in the Composition Wall Light collection is a testament to our dedication to repurposing already-existing resources. The marble in the Wall light is leftover marble off-cuts from Italian stone makers.

The Composition Table Light's first batch of production was made in China, from Chinese marble. When the next batch is made, FÓLK will make it with the same materials and production techniques as the Wall Light.

A standard aluminum pipe

The circular shape that characterises the Composition lights is a standard sized aluminum pipe.

Inside the Aluminum pipe is a dimmable LED light strip, which uses less energy and lasts longer than the usual incandescent light bulb.

How FÓLK approaches lowering the environmental footprint

At FÓLK we strive to limit and reduce the environmental footprint of our products and we also want to encourage sustainable living through the use of our products.

One of the methods we use is measuring the CO2 footprint of our products. According to the EU, 80% of a product‘s environmental impacts are decided in the design phase.

FÓLK’s principles help decrease the environmental footprint. Typically, the largest contributors of impacts are:

  • The amount and type of material used
  • The level of waste of material created in the production phase
  • The type of energy used in the production phase
  • The durability of the product and a product‘s lifetime.
  • The end of life and the opportunity to reuse or recycle the product‘s materials.

CO2 measurements of Composition Lights

FÓLK used Målbar screening tool version 2.9608 single indicator for Carbon Footprint analysis in the design and production development. Example of results are as follows for the last batch produced:

Table Light – Green/Brushed: 50kg CO2e

Wall Light - Triangle Black/Matte Black: 31kg CO2e
