Stories from FÓLK

It’s promising to see BlackRock’s CEO Larry Fink emphasize the need for a green transition, with investments in sustainable solutions reaching $4 trillion. However, achieving a carbon-neutral society requires more than capital—it needs systemic change. At FÓLK, we believe that design, culture, and collective engagement play key roles in transforming the value chain. With 80% of a product's environmental impact determined in the design phase, our focus is on clever design choices and the intelligent use of new circular materials.
Times are changing, and so is the way we consume. At FÓLK Reykjavik, we are committed to driving positive change towards a more sustainable, circular economy. With a background in sustainability, I founded FÓLK to offer high-quality, responsibly designed products. Our principles guide everything from design to production, emphasizing durability, natural materials, and transparency. We support the UN’s Goal #12 and believe that change happens with patience, persistence, and collaboration across the value chain.
Theodora Alfredsdottir, a rising Icelandic designer and nominee for the 2019 Formex Nova Design Award, shares her journey and design philosophy. Known for her storytelling through design, Theodora’s work often highlights the manufacturing process. In collaboration with FÓLK, she designed two lamps that balance creativity, material choice, and sustainability. Her reflections on finding inspiration, overcoming design challenges, and adapting to larger-scale production offer valuable insights into her thoughtful approach.
At FÓLK, we believe that every object should have a story, just as important as the product itself. Our designs, like the new Living Objects collection by Ólína Rögnudóttir, use natural and recyclable materials like wood, metals, and marble. We prioritize supply chain transparency, joining movements like #whomademythings to ensure ethical production. Let’s ask where our home products come from and choose thoughtfully. Follow our journey towards greater transparency and sustainable living.

Three years ago, I left a leadership role to build FÓLK Reykjavik with a clear vision: to create a company that offers high-quality, environmentally responsible design. It required patience and persistence, but we now collaborate with talented designers and responsible manufacturers, creating products that promote a sustainable lifestyle. We support the UN’s Goal #12 on responsible production and consumption. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey—let’s continue building a brighter future together.

Sitting with a cup of coffee, I realize that every item in my home has a story. At FÓLK, we believe that a home is a collection of these stories, blending aesthetics, functionality, and mindful choices. With a deep concern for the environment, I've spent years advocating for social responsibility. FÓLK was founded to offer products that are designed consciously, aiming to make a positive impact on our planet. Join our community and discover our thoughtfully designed products.
